IMDb TV app

IMDb is considered the authoritative source to settle trivia bets during family game nights and bar conversations. An IMDb trivia game was the obvious next step to help grow the existing product portfolio. Since, it was also the first time IMDb was dipping it’s toes into revenue diversification outside advertisements this project went through the highest level of expectations and scrutiny from the core business leadership.

My role was to define and deliver a fun trivia game collaborating with a small game development team while creating a virtual goods story that supported business objectives. I worked closely with the PM to manage product quality during the development process, iterating on feedback from on user studies i helped plan and execute.

Windows8 Explorer - rethinking Folders (Seadragon)

How could Seadragon technology be utilized to improve the Windows Explorer?
Opening a folder is as simple as zooming in. Navigating back a level up is as simple as zooming out to a certain depth. The proposed UX surfaces up contextual action at the folder level and makes it easy to peruse files inside, without opening the folder. Additionally, the file management actions like delete or creating a new folder are integrated within the interactive surface – double tap scroll bar area to change the two dimensional surface into a faux-3D one where the corners are now utilized as “Delete”/”New folder” affordances.

Microsoft Live Labs encouraged a unique hands on culture. Every three months, for a week the LL went into the Out of The Box meditative state where folks worked individually or collaboratively on something creative. A lot of great ideas poured forth from such experimentations which spanned from a niche product feature to seeds for groundbreaking new technologies that aligned with Live Labs manifesto.

Desktop gadget - incoming messages in a day

This lightweight notification gadget was a result of such an OOTB project. I designed the UI/interaction and worked with a developer (graphics expert) to build a working prototype. The undulating dynamic gradient background represents the time of the day – the shadows map to sun’s angle based on location).

Dr. Gary Flake established Microsoft Live Labs in January 2006. The innovative web technologies and products developed at LL heavily influenced internal products across Microsoft.

LL instituted processes around in-house incubation and promotion of new ideas that were culled from the confluence of the brightest minds in research, engineering and design. Startup Factory, as it was called, was my primary motivation to join Live Labs. This opportunity to seed an idea and nurture it through to a robust product, has been one of the best work experiences I have had to date.

Manaus

Manaus (Post purchase product life cycle management service) was a Microsoft Live Labs Startup Factory project. I engaged marketing and research to identify user demographics and their particular needs. Worked with the project leads to drive team brainstorming, refinement of product goals, scenario development, task flows and feature prioritization. These sketches above show a few pre/post-login landing experiences.

SF was dissolved among other organizational changes at Live Labs as Microsoft braced up for long term impacts of US economy recession on the company.
